Halloween Presentation to 4th Graders!

The Setup

Yesterday, on Halloween, I got to do something really cool - Give a talk about carnivorous plants to a couple classes of 4th Graders. It was a great experience, and definitely something that I'd do again. The kids were fascinated with the plants, and really liked hearing about our native Sarracenia purpurea and Drosera. (Although, of course, their favorite part was definitely the Venus Flytrap feeding).

It was really neat to be able to help out, and volunteer my time to teach kids about carnivorous plants. It was around 4th Grade that many of us got our first Venus Flytrap (and promptly killed it). I hope that my talk not only taught them about carnivorous plants, but also inspired a few to convince their parents to let them grow them at home. (They'll definitely be growing them in the classroom as the New England Carnivorous Plant Society donated a few plants to each of the classes, which is a completely awesome way to help the kids see how the plants grow over the course of the year and inspire them to get into carnivorous gardening).
