The entrance to the show
This past weekend, the
New England Carnivorous Plant Society had its first ever
preshow in Salem, New Hampshire. I was there both days, all day, and it was a big hit! For a first time event, we had about half the turnout of our regular fall show alongside two newspapers and a local TV station. I'm hoping we make it an annual event.

One of the Sarracenia display tables
At the show, we had every genus of carnivorous plant represented, though Sarracenia, Nepenthes, and Venus Flytraps were best represented. It was a lot of fun to meet other experienced growers, novices, people who came because they weren't sure what carnivorous plants were, and others who had been growing these plants for years, but didn't know about carnivorous plant communities.

Me giving a VFT feeding demo
The best part of the show was, however, getting to give a few Venus Flytrap feedings. As you might imagine, the younger kids thought that was the coolest thing that they had ever seen, and there were quite a few parents equally amazed.

Getting interviewed by a reporter
The reporters all seemed to arrive when there were few NECPS members around, so I ended up being interviewed. They were largely fascinated with a few, large, showy Nepenthes and Sarracenia (and the fact that people grew these plants and wrote
books about them).
