In Vietnam, Nepenthes are Popular "Trees"

Nepenthes "trees"
Well, isn't this interesting. In Vietnam, Nepenthes are apparently sold as "trees" known for having "pots" that catch insects. These "pots" come in two forms - long or round - and is commonly sold as an ornamental tree in Saigon. It is so popular, in fact, that nurseries that supply it are commonly sold out.

Seedlings
The Nepenthes that are commonly grown there must be lowlanders, as the seedlings are reported to grow rapidly, although stem propagation seems to be the most popular method of propagation. Reportedly, the plants are also very easy to grow, only requiring water, thus making them ideal for busy people.

Planting Nepenthes
If you're in Saigon you should be warned about prices, however. Prices can range from cheap (~$2.50 USD) to expensive (~$9 USD, but can be "tens" of USD). (I wish they were that cheap in the US!). One thing that does worry me about those prices is the origin of many of the plants. I can only hope that they are all nursery stock and none are taken from the wild.
