Nepenthes gracilis "Black"
I've been working on adjusting my lowlanders lighting recently. As you may be able to tell from this Nepenthes gracilis "Black" which is, in fact, black, my current light setup is pretty powerful. Oftentimes, in cultivation, this plant will be grown under insufficient lighting which causes it to be green or greenish with some black streaking. Good lighting will allow it to darken to its full potential.

Nepenthes albomarginata "Red"
The only problem with giving Nepenthes gracilis lighting equivalent to the equatorial sun is that many lowlanders, such as Nepenthes albomarginata, often grow in locations which allow them to avoid the full brunt of the mid-day equatorial sun. As such, they don't flourish in such bright conditions. So, I'm trying to find a happy medium, one that will allow the sun-loving plants to get enough sun, but also not scorch the shade-seeking plants.

Nepenthes albomarginata "Green"
Yet, even as I fiddle, I do have some plants which are doing quite well. This Nepenthes albomarginata "green" for instance. It's a very new plant for me, but one which has adjusted nicely and seems likely to continue doing well. (It's also one of my favorite lowlanders. I love green albos!).
May I ask where you found the N.Gracilis plant?
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while, but I think that it was a private grower. It may have been California Carnivores.
DeleteThanks,I will check with them...ordered seeds from Italy, but not holding my breath on success with that..(; Was trying to find the smallest Nepenthes for a carnivorous terrarium and this looks like the perfect option!
