Types of Utricularia sandersonii

Utricularia sandersonii "Blue"
To my knowledge, there are two "kinds" of Utricularia sandersonii - "blue" and "typical". Happily, I've recently had both in flower and was able to take some photos of them both. (I'm not sure of any place online where the two are directly compared photographically, although I'm sure someplace else exists).

Utricularia sandersonii "Typical"
As you can see, the "Blue" form has wider flowers and lacks the central yellow splotch (the bunny's nose). It's also a bit more difficult to get to flower, in my experience, and has fewer flowers when it does flower.

Utricularia sandersonii "Blue"
I'm actually really happy that my U. sandersonii "Blue" flowered. The pot had, apparently, gotten some Utricularia livida contaminating it. The U. livida flowered and I thought - mistakenly - that my pot didn't actually contain any U. sandersonii. Turns out, I was wrong. (Which is great!)

Utricularia sandersonii "Typical"
One thing I have noticed about both forms of U. sandersonii are quite slow to spread. All my other terrestrial Utrics spread quite rapidly, especially after a dose of MaxSea, but the U. sandersonii is quite slow. I'm not sure why. In any case, I'm glad it's happy enough to flower.

  1. Great pics of the flowers. Really illustrates how they get their reputation as bunny faces haha.
