Utrics in Bloom!

Utricularia pubescens
Utricularia pubescens is one of my favorite terrestrial Utricularia. It just has such neat flowers and leaves! Happily, mine is flowering again. Like many terrestrial Utrics, it seems to flower in cycles. This is the first time it has flowered since I got the DSLR.

Utricularia livida 'Jacoby, South Africa'
Here's the ever prolific Utricularia livida. I recently discovered that it's the form from 'Jacoby, South Africa.' (Apparently, different "forms" of Utricularia livida are quite distinct and easily recognizable. My guess is that Utricularia livida is not so much one species, but several closely related species).

Utricularia livida 'Pale Yellow Flower'
I've also seen the first flower on my Utricularia livida 'Pale Yellow Flower.' Its flower is very pale yellow, almost white. Strangely, the flower was atop an almost 8" tall stalk, much taller than Utricularia livida usually has (at least in my experience). The form of the flower is almost identical to that of 'Jacoby, South Africa' but the color is markedly different.

Utricularia livida 'Pale Yellow Flower'
In some light, the flowers look almost white. Yet, there is a faint yellow line that bisects the flower even in lighting that makes it look white. Quite interesting...

Utricularia sandersonii '"Blue Flower"
My Utricularia sandersonii "Blue Flower" has also decided to produce copious flowers over the past few months. I think the higher water table that I've experimenting with has had a positive effect on the growth of this variant of Utricularia sandersonii. I would recommend a higher water table year round to anyone looking to experiment with this species.

  1. Very nice! I have a carpet of U. sandersonii 'Blue" in a small orchidarium and it blooms like crazy. It's in about 1/2" of substrate and stays quite wet, so I think you're right about high water level. Generally, I find that if a utric is reluctant to bloom, experimenting with the water level or photoperiod usually does the trick.
