Cultivating Carnivorous Plants!
I am very pleased to announce that my guide to growing carnivorous plants has been published! I've been working on this book since the end of last summer and it's finally here! I'm so pleased!
I've been collecting and
reviewing books about carnivorous plants for several years now. During the course of collecting those books, a few friends suggested that I write my own guide to cultivating carnivorous plants. I thought about it for a little while, and decided to go ahead with it.

A Sample Page from the Temperate Drosera Section
The book is 8" x 10" and totals some 228 pages. It is divided into chapters. The first few chapters of the book deal with more generalized cultivation issues, such as growing plants indoors and pests. The remainder of the book is divided into chapters on the basis of genus. Each chapter covering a specific genus, e.g., Drosera, is further subdivided as necessary based upon plants which grow in similar conditions. Where applicable, I've provided a "growing guide" for each subdivision. (You can see the guide for temperate Drosera above).

A Sample Page from the Nepenthes Chapter
As I started writing this book, I realized that writing a book that was comprehensive for each and every species of carnivorous plant was both time and cost prohibitive. (There's a reason Allen Lowrie's Magnum Opus sells for almost $200. The grand majority of that cost definitely goes to printing those books). As a consequence, I decided to include tables of useful information for all currently known species for each genus of carnivorous plant (if there were more than a few species for that genus). My goal was to provide some information which might be helpful in cultivating each species.

A Sample Page from the Utricularia Chapter
If you're more into pictures (and let's be honest, who isn't? They're my favorite part of carnivorous plant books, too!), I've filled this book with plenty of pictures. I find them particularly helpful for species such as Utricularia sandersonii, where there are two common forms in cultivation, but not a whole lot of comparative photographs.

ReplyDeleteWow! I am just visiting from the Sarrecenia forum. Four years ago when I caught the CP bug I red EVERY book out there on bogs and pitcher plants, and was only mildly impressed. Can't wait to see your book in person
