Blogs About Carnivorous Plants

Previously, I wrote about carnivorous plant forums and other places to discuss carnivorous plants, but, sometimes, it's nice to get content without having to ask questions or search it out. In the carnivorous plant world, much of that is produced on blogs. Today, I'm going to list the English-language carnivorous plant blogs. (If you know of any others, please add them to the comment section).

In no particular order:
  • Sundews Etc.
    • Devon's blog's focus is largely on his experiences growing (and photographing) his collection. It's one of my favorite blogs to read because Devon updates it several times a week with fantastic photos and great information about his plants and his experiences with carnivorous plants. His setup on the west coast is a bit different from mine, so his posts always give me a bit of information about growing plants that I didn't know before, and constantly inspire me to add to my want list.
  • Nitrogenseekers
    • Paul Barden's blog is a fantastic collection of photographs of his (highland) Nepenthes collection. If you want to see what very happy plants look like, look no further than Paul's blog. He certainly has some of the best maintained plants in cultivation, and great skill with his camera. If you're anything like me, you'll find your want list growing as you flip through a few pages of his photographs.
  • Hooray! Plants!
    • Melody's blog features both her collection and her explorations of carnivorous plant territory in Northeastern Florida (i.e. Sarracenia minor and Drosera capillaris territory). She updates it several times a month - and sometimes throws in some shots of her orchid collection - and always provides some interesting information about her plants or plants in the wild.
  • The Pitcher Plant Project
    • Rob's grows Sarracenia (and a few Nepenthes) in a greenhouse in California, and takes amazing photos of them. Recently, he was a featured presenter at Sunset Magazine's Celebration Weekend 2014, which is pretty awesome (though not as awesome as his collection of Sarracenia). His collection is definitely worth a look.
  • Zone6b
    • Carl's blog chronicles his adventures growing his plants outdoors in Niagara Falls, Canada. As you might imagine, his blog features "hardier" plants than Nepenthes, i.e. Sarracenia, Dionaea, and Drosera. Before reading Carl's blog, I was not aware that, with good mulching, most Sarracenia and Dionaea can survive outdoors in very cold conditions. Since I live in Zone 5a/5b, I rely on Carl's blog to know when it's safe to put my Sarracenia and Dionaea outside.
  • ExB
    • Technically, ExB is a tumblr...tumble?...I don't actually know what tumblr blogs are called, but, in any case, Kevin regularly updates with fantastic photos of his collection, making it worthy of mention on this list. (Plus, Kevin is one of the most active social media carnivorous plant growers, so he's a great resource, especially on Drosera-related issues).
  • The Pitcher Plantation
    • A Sarracenia blog from Canberra, Australia, this is a great resource for those of you from similar conditions. Sometimes, John features other plants on his blog, such as Cephalotus, but that is a rarity. Mostly, it's Sarracenia, particularly Sarracenia flava and hybrids with flava.

I'll also give an honorable mention to Predatory Plants' blog, which has only recently started. It's too soon to know if that'll be regularly updated with helpful information, but I figured I'd mention it.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out Natch, and thanks for turning me onto a couple of new CP blogs. It's a small community out there so we've got to stay abreast of who's growing!
